About ‘Bus Stop Optimization’ In the U.S., transit authorities are learning that substantial improvements to service can be made by making adjustments to bus stops. Known as ‘Bus Stop Optimization,’ independent research (“Why Getting Rid of Bus Stops Can Improve Bus Service.” Governing Magazine, Sept. 18, 2014) has provided compelling evidence that there is significant improvement to bus service when approximately 40 to 45 percent of stops are eliminated. Benefits of Bus Stop Optimization include: • Improved travel time and shorter rides • Improved accessibility because stops are better located for customers • Reduced emissions and cost
Results of RTS’ Independent Bus Stop Optimization Study On behalf of RTS, Passero Associates conducted an independent study last year to examine RTS bus stops. Results showed that RTS has 3,400 bus stops—an excessive number compared to other transit authorities—sometimes as many as 14-16 per mile.
