Wind, snow, and freezing rain are all too familiar for Rochester residents.  The following tips will help you to stay comfortable and enjoy the ride.

1. Plan Ahead

Winter weather affects all traffic. If bad weather is in the forecast, consider taking an earlier bus so you can get to work, school, or your appointment on time. Need help planning? Download a free weather app like AccuWeather to stay on top of the forecast, and use our Where’s My Bus? tools to make planning your route simple. Don’t forget! It’s always a great idea to plan your trip the night before.

2. Dress Warmly

Even the best laid plans go awry, and that can mean waiting outside in frigid temps. The RTS Transit Center and our entire bus fleet are heated, but don’t forget to wear your hat, gloves and warm socks to keep the chill out.

3. Stand Back & Stay Safe

When the roads are slick, buses may slide as they approach the curb. To stay safe, please stay on the curb until the bus comes to a complete stop. If your stop is blocked by heavy snow and ice, please wait at the closest cleared driveway, cross street or bus stop – our Bus Operators are trained to pick you up there. Please avoid standing in the street or on top of a snow bank while waiting for the bus.

4. Step Carefully

When entering and exiting the bus, please watch your step and be aware of slick surfaces like steps or ramps. Use the handrails and slow down to ensure your safety.

5. Thank Your Bus Operator

Bad traffic from heavy snow or icy streets is less than fun to drive in. If your bus is late, please keep in mind your Bus Operator is doing his or her best to get you to your destination on time and -- more importantly -- safely. When you arrive at your stop or the RTS Transit Center take a moment to thank your Bus Operator!
