Rochester Genesee Regional Transit Authority announced today that RTS Route 52 will be
discontinued effective Sept. 1, 2014. The service offers East side city residents a direct route to
the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) and Strong Memorial Hospital.
Route 52 was started Sept. 1, 2013, in partnership with the University of Rochester. Despite
robust promotional efforts on the part of RTS and URMC, there were not enough customers to
continue the service. Route 52 customers and URMC employees have been notified in advance
of the discontinuation so that alternative options could be explored.
RTS continues to offer frequent service to the University of Rochester/Mt. Hope area on nine of
its bus routes (listed below). RTS Routes that serve the UR campus via Winton and Mt. Hope are
18/19. (For Park Avenue area customers traveling downtown, Routes 1 Park Ave or 17 East Ave
are likely the two best options.)
- 4 Genesee
- 5 South Ave
- 8 Chili/Strong
- 12 19th Ward/MCC
- 18/19 University Ave and Plymouth Ave 24 Marketplace
- 50 MCC
- 91 East Henrietta/Avon
- 4/2 Thurston, 2/4 Thurston
RGRTA CEO Bill Carpenter said, “We value our partnership with URMC to tailor bus service that
meets the needs of their employees and patients. While this route did not generate the
ridership we have expected, we will continue to work together to explore public transportation
offerings that make it easier and faster for customers to reach jobs, shopping and medical
care.”Customers with questions about identifying alternate routes, should contact RTS Customer
Service at 288-1700 or email at rts.customerservice@rgrta.com. Customers can also download
the RTS ‘Where’s My Bus’ mobile app for schedules and information in real time (available for
Apple and Android devices—information is at http://www.rgrta.com/ridersguide/wheresmybus.aspx.)
