Rochester, NY: The American Public Works Association (APWA) has recognized the RTS Transit Center in Rochester, NY with the 2016 National Project of the Year Award in the “Structures $25 - $75 Million Category.” RTS will formally receive the honor at the annual APWA Expo awards banquet on August 29, 2016 in Minneapolis. Bergmann Associates served as the architect/engineer of record on the design-build project team with constructor The Pike Company.
“This award is a testament to the hard work and talent of the teams at Bergmann Associates, The Pike Company and RTS, and I thank them for making the RTS Transit Center the successful facility it is,” said Bill Carpenter, CEO of RTS. “I thank the APWA for this honor and hope that the RTS Transit Center and the teams that designed, built and operate it can serve as a model for similar projects around the country.”
The $50 million, 87,000 sq. ft. RTS Transit Center opened on budget and ahead of schedule on November 28, 2014. The facility's design theme is movement and motion; translated physically and abstractly through the design and use of materials as well as by the physical movement of people throughout the city in combination with “in and out” action of the concourse. The ceiling’s dramatic illuminated complex curves follow the roofline of the building and envelop the main heart of the concourse. The flowing terrazzo floor pattern moves throughout the space. Prior to winning this national award, the RTS Transit Center won both the local APWA Genesee Valley Chapter award and the New York State Project of the Year competitions.
