Rochester, NY: The opening of six new, high-tech bus stations around the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) and College Town was celebrated today by Regional Transit Service (RTS) CEO Bill Carpenter, Representative Louise Slaughter and Peter Robinson, vice president and chief operating officer of URMC. The three were joined for a ribbon cutting ceremony by the contractors and partners who built the new stations.

“Thanks to Representative Slaughter and our strong partnership with the University of Rochester, our customers now have six new, high-tech bus stations that will make it easier for them to enjoy the ride,” said Bill Carpenter, CEO of RTS. “By spreading the stations around the URMC campus and College Town, transit will be more easily accessible to customers at our second busiest destination.”
The six bus stations provide weather protection and are equipped with features such as bike racks, seating and lean rails, lighting, trash receptacles, video surveillance, and heat and Blue Light security systems at designated locations. Digital signage will display messaging and RTS arrival data in real time.
“These new state-of-the-art bus stations are good for riders and will help relieve traffic congestion and the parking crunch facing Rochester. Bus transportation is intrinsically linked to the economic and educational stability of our community, and I’m pleased that these stations will help encourage more people to use public transportation,” said Congresswoman Slaughter.
The total cost of the project was $2 million, with funding coming from Rep. Slaughter through the Federal Transit Administration, the New York State Department of Transportation, and RTS. The design and construction of the bus stations was performed by Bergmann Associates, The Pike Co., and Brasco International.
“Our collaborative efforts with RTS continuously improve the community’s access to the University of Rochester Medical Center campus and provide our employees additional opportunities for commuting,” said Peter G. Robinson, vice president and chief operating officer of URMC. “The strategy for placing the new state-of-the-art bus shelters around the campus and along College Town meets the needs of our patients, staff, and neighbors.”
The names and locations of the new stations are as follows:
• Strong Hospital Station: at the entrance to Golisano Children’s Hospital on Crittenden Blvd.
• Mental Health & Wellness Station: at the URMC Mental Health and Wellness entrance on Crittenden Blvd.
• School of Medicine Station: at the School of Medicine entrance on Elmwood Ave.
• Eastman Dental Station: at the Eastman Dental entrance on Elmwood Ave.
• College Town Station: On Mt. Hope at Celebration Drive.
• Mt. Hope Station: On Mt. Hope next to Bruegger’s.
