Regional Transit Service (RTS) CEO Bill Carpenter released the following statement today in response to Governor Cuomo’s announcement that RTS will receive grant funding for two important public transportation projects in Monroe County.

“On behalf of RTS and public transit customers in Monroe County, I thank Governor Cuomo for recognizing the positive impact these projects will have on our customers, the community and our environment. Electric vehicle technology improves every year and we are excited to work with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) in New York City to implement the best possible technology for our community, and if funding permits, identify ways to further expand the technology into our fleet. The funding for mobile ticketing will help us accelerate our plans to make this new technology a reality for our customers. RTS introduced the Tap & Go! RTS Fast Pass in 2016 and in addition to the positive response from customers, we have also seen a reduction in the amount of time it takes them to board the bus, which helps us provide more reliable service to the community.”

RTS will receive $3.328 million for a mobile ticketing system and $5 million for the purchase of five electric buses. This funding is part of the Federal Highway Administration’s Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) program. The CMAQ program was designed to support surface transportation projects and other related efforts that contribute air quality improvements and provide congestion relief.

More information about the CMAQ program can be found on the Federal Highway Administration website.
