If you shop at the Henrietta Wegmans, you may have noticed a brand new bus shelter standing tall along Hylan Drive. The glass and steel shelter sits on a concrete pad (transit speak for “paved bus stop area”) and provides customers a place to rest and stay protected from the elements while they wait for the bus.
RTS had been working on adding a shelter to the stop (Hylan and Wegmans, ID 1785) for more than a year when, in fall 2016, the stop gained local media attention after being named a finalist in StreetsBlogUSA’s “Sorriest Bus Stop in America” competition.
Though installing a shelter may seem like a simple process, there are many steps that must be completed to ensure it’s safe and structurally sound. RTS partnered with the town of Henrietta, Wegmans, and Monroe County to secure permits, get shelter design approval, receive rights of way permission, and meet additional construction requirements to move forward on the project. Thanks to a mild winter, construction on the shelter began in January 2017 and was ready for use in February.
Although the shelter hasn’t been open long, RTS has already received positive feedback. In an email to RTS, one of our customers wrote:
“I would like to thank RTS for building the much-needed bus shelter in the Wegmans Plaza on Hyland Drive. Employees who work at the [Marketplace] mall and university students have had to wait for years on wet, muddy ground in the rain and cold.
“I'm grateful that they can now be sheltered from the elements while waiting for public transportation.”
