Community is invited to weigh-in on recommendations to improve RTS service
Results of an independent study to examine the efficiency of RTS bus stops will be presented at a public workshop from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, in the Kate Gleason Auditorium of the Rochester Central Library, 115 South Avenue, Rochester.
A public information session took place in March 2014, where the community was invited to learn about the study’s goals, scope and schedule. The study was conducted to analyze current RTS bus stop locations in an effort to improve safety, traffic flow and service for RTS customers throughout its service area. There are currently approximately 3,400 RTS bus stops and over time, the placement, safety, and usage of the bus stops have changed. The result is that some stops no longer serve RTS customers very well.
Engineering consultants Passero Associates of Rochester, NY, and Kimley-Horn reviewed the current number of bus stops and their conditions. Passero Associates was awarded the contract to conduct the study which is being funded in its entirety through the
Genesee Transportation Council’s Unified Planning Work Program (UPWP).
Optimizing the bus stops is one of several RTS initiatives. The RTS Transit Center, opening November 28, creates new opportunities to provide improved service to customers. Route numbering, naming, and color-coding will change as well, making it easier to understand where and how routes travel in and around the city. New bus stop signs will allow customers to easily identify which routes stop at each location and which direction the buses are traveling. Together, these updates work toward RTS’ mission to be the community’s provider and partner for safe, reliable, and convenient public transportation that more and more people can build their lives around.
RTS representatives will be on hand at the workshop to provide information and answer questions. Feedback from the workshop will be used to make final recommendations. Implementation of the recommendations is expected to begin in 2015.
